The Different Versions On The Pontiac Grand Am
By: Robert, Wed Apr 1st, 2009
Built from 1975 through to 2005 in several different guises and periods, the Pontiac Grand Am begin life as a middle size car but in later life joined the ranks of compact cars that the American populace demanded. The Grand Am name has appeared on a number of very different cars as a result, yet given the quality of the earlier models it is no surprise that many are still on the roads today. While the earliest models - much sought after by collectors these days - featured huge 6.5 or 7.4 liter V8 engines, the latter day vehicles were powered by much more compact, but equally powerful, engines that met the needs of the 21st century motorist. Indeed, the last models to be manufactured under the Grand Am name, in 2005, were very attractive and hugely popular models available with either 2.2 or 2.4 liter four cylinder engines or a bigger, 3.4liter, V6; the latter pushed out 170bhp, as much as the enormous V8 from 1975! With a choice of automatic or manual transmission, and a quite comprehensive choice of interior trim specifications, the Grand Am appealed to a wide customer base, and the sportier two-door models were attractive to the younger buyer. The Grand Am, in original form, entered the market at wrong time; the early 1970's saw the onset of the fuel crisis, and as such big-engined cars were looking at a limited life. The way Pontiac, under the GM banner, responded to this by redesigning a newer, more economical, car to carry the tag ensured that it lived on for many years, and the Pontiac Grand Am remains a firm favorite for many.
