Important SEO Tips To Help Boost Your SERPS
By: Chris Mootoo, Wed Nov 29th, 2006
As we all know traffic is the lifeblood of any public website. You can build it, but making them come is an entirely different story and a science in itself. At the 2007 Las Vegas PubCon there was an Interactive Site Review Session in which webmasters submitted their sites for the panelists to review and critique on SEO techniques. The panel consisted of Danny Sullivan, Matt Cutts from Google, Greg Boser from WebGuerilla and Time Mayer from Yahoo. One of the most prevalent phrases used throughout the entire session was 'link bait', something to keep in mind.
The tips they gave out are invaluable to getting high SERPS and turning the resultant traffic flow into revenue. Here is a breakdown of the most important ones:
Blogs are a search engine favorite. Blog about your target area and products to provide the unique content the engines look for.
If you sell manufactured products from your site then write your own descriptions. Manufacturer copy is probably all over the web unless its a small retailer base.
Unique content is a must and very important. Another key phrase besides 'link baiting' that was discussed a lot.
If you're queries are locally based, say in the case of a brick-and-mortar location, then getting to the top 3 in Google Local will get you on the front page of the standard search if geographic queries are used.
To optimize for Google Local, use the Google Local Business Center to claim your business and help with indexing.
Geographic targeting as in the case for optimizing for Google Local is best assisted by getting links to local entities. Local directories and the local Chamber of Commerce were mentioned.
Get rid of Javascript menus. Search engine algorithms flag these.
Never use any link exchanges. (Really strongly suggested by Matt Cutts)
A follow-up from the previous point, get quality links instead of quantity.
Optimize each page on your site for title, keywords etc according to its content. They are all potential entry points.
Template based sites may have problems with high ranking as the engines see them as alike. Customize in order to help this out, within the terms of your template license of course.
Matt Cutts said "Session Ids can be poison for crawlers". If you can help it, don't serve session ids to the search engine bots. This is most prevalent in the case of forums which can lead to the bots seeing duplicate content and subsequently penalizing you for it. If you run a forum or dynamic site that used session Ids, get a mod to prevent at least the main search engine bots from seeing them.
